Each ml contains 300 mg Florfenicol
Like chloramphenicol, florfenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic that has activity against many bacteria. It acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
After IM injection, approximately 79% of the dose is bioavailable. The drug appears to be well distributed throughout the body, including achievement of therapeutic levels in the CSF. Mean serum half life is 18 hours. In dogs, florfenicol is absorbed poorly after subcutaneous injection and had an elimination half life of less than 5 hours. Cats however, had high absorption of a 100 mg/ml solution when given IM and had an elimination half life of less than 5 hours.
The drug is approved for use in cattle for the treatment of BRD associated with Pasteurella haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Haemophilus somnus. Florfenicol is indicated in treatment of infections caused by susceptible organism like Mycoplasma, particularly when the use of chloramfenicol is impractical due to its myelotoxic potential.
Contraindications and warnings:
Do not give this drug IV.
Florfenicol is not for use in cattle of breeding age.
Do not exceed 10 ml per injection site.
Cattle: 20 mg/kg IM injection in neck muscle only and repeat in 48 hours with same dose. Alternatively, a single 40 mg/kg SC dose in neck region may be used.
Dogs: 20-50 mg/kg IM or SC q8h for 3-5 days
Cats: 20-50 mg/kg IM or SC q12h for 3-5 days
Noted transient adverse reactions in cattle include anorexia, decreased water consumption or diarrhea. Injection site reactions can occur. Reactions may be more severe if injected at site other than the neck.
In toxicity studies where feeder calves where injected with up to 10X of the recommended dosage, the adverse effects noted above were seen, plus increased serum enzymes were noted. These effects were generally transient in nature. Long term (43 days) standard dosage studies showed a transient in feed consumption, but no long-term negative effects were noted.
Meat: Slaughter withdrawal is 28 days post IM injection and 38 days after the SC injection.
It should be stored between 2°-30° C. Protect from direct sunlight.
